Kinder Scout Hike - December 2018 |
I started The Outside Project for myself at the beginning of the year after hearing a statistic that only 5% of a human’s ENTIRE LIFE is now spent outside! That’s just 438 hours a year. And whilst it really shocked me at just how little that sounded, when I look at my day-to-day life and the lives of those around me, I can completely believe it to be true.
I love being outside, and last year even rented out as plot at a local allotment to give myself a place and a bit more of a reason to spend more time outside. But even with that, the cold winter months have drawn in meaning there’s not as much to do there and with less sunlight hours in a day it made my usual summer/autumn trips to the allotment after work impossible.
I noticed myself falling into the trap a lot of us are in of waking up, driving to work, going to the gym and driving home - day in, day out - more often than not with the only time that I was outside being simply to walk between some kind of building and my car. Once I realised that this was happening, I knew that something had to change. There is always such a feeling of vitality and relaxation within me whenever I am outside, and it has been shown to improve many areas of peoples lives and mentalities such as creativity, mood and energy levels. Not to mention the health benefits that can come with outside activities such as walking, running and exploring.
Each months contains 720 hours, of which 5% is just 36. So JOIN ME. Make a conscious effort to get outside more.
You don’t have to hike every weekend, or get an allotment.
It’s cycling to work, opting for a run outside over one on the treadmill, walking to the shop instead of getting in the car, or simply reading a book in your back garden.
Our Planet is such a beautiful place, and our busy lives mean that we are at risk of never spending any time in it.
